| Helping Kids Experience God
You are not alone if you struggle with wrapping your mind around the concept of who God is; this unbelievably powerful, majestic, ever-lasting, above-us Being? We catch a tiny peek of His power and majesty in creation, in contemplation of His life here on earth, the cross, or in His dealings with us. We are moved to wonder and worship when we do sense a bit of what and who He really is.
How then do we pass on to our children a concept of God so that they too can get excited about Him and can have that sense of awe that leads to worship? The Scriptures make it clear that we do need to pass on, point out, and teach so that our children will not forget about God. (Deut 6:5-7)
How about the thrilling wonders of nature! Children can develop their innate sense of wonder and awe if the adults in their lives encourage them to look, touch, and listen. As they are introduced to nature they also learn to treasure and take care of their world. It can be a necessary counter-balance to the dangers of technology saturation.
Here is what the experts say: “Researchers have found that nature is vital to children's healthy development in every way, including spiritually and emotionally.” (KID'S MINISTRY IDEAS, 2009)
So bundle-up and bring along some supplies, e.g. a bug-catching bottle, bags to collect objects, or art materials. Make a set of questions such as:
“What do you think is the most amazing thing about this creation?”
“If you were God, what would you have enjoyed most about making this creation?”
“Why do you think God made this creation as a gift for our world?”
See if you and your child don't come away with a renewed sense of having experienced a little bit of an awesome, majestic, and powerful God.
