Light
On the first day of creation it was dark until “God said, ‘let there be light’: and there was light.” (Gen 1:3) Since that momentous day the earth has been bathed in light making life on
this small pebble in space possible. Almost all life as we know it is dependent ultimately on light to drive the photosynthesis in plants which then nourish animal life forms, including ourselves. We are dependent on light not only for life but to be able to find our path in our physical surroundings.
What is light? Light is a form of radiant energy that can travel freely through space, even with enough force to propel objects in space. It is composed of photons, tiny bundles of energy, released by atoms as the energy of an “excited atom” returns to its basal level of
energy. The photons produced will have different energy levels, and wave lengths producing the various colors we see. As we view light after it has passed through a prism, its streams of photons, of varying energy levels, have been bent or refracted differently so we then see a broken picture of the whole.
Scripture talks about another light in John 1:4 when it says “in Him was life and that life was the light of men”. Jesus was the light sent to the world to remove the darkness of sin and show the love of God to all people. Jesus said “I am the light of the world: whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). “While I am in the world, I am the light of the world” (John 9:5)
Jesus also said “You are the light of the world—Let your light shine before men that they may see your good deeds, and praise your Father is heaven.” (Matt 5: 14-16) Do we each live a life that allows the light of Christ’s love within us shine out to all whom we come in contact? Will they see a full and true representation of the love of God or is that light bent or broken so the picture of God is distorted? |
